Pangasinan State University (PSU), in collaboration with the Department of Education (DepEd)
Regional Office I, conducted a webinar on March 28, 2025, aimed at mainstreaming Global Citizenship Education (GCED) as part of broader efforts to support Education for Sustainable Development (ESD).
Titled “Mainstreaming Global Citizenship Education (GCED) in Basic Education: A Response to Education for Sustainable Development (ESD),” the virtual event was organized by PSU’s Office of the Vice President for Local and International Affairs (OVPLIA) through its GCED unit.
Held via Zoom, the webinar equipped educators and school administrators with practical strategies to incorporate global citizenship principles into the basic education curriculum.
In his keynote address, DepEd Regional Director Dr. Tolentino G. Aquino emphasized the critical role of Global Citizenship Education (GCED) in shaping globally aware and socially responsible learners.
He also highlighted the need to empower students with the knowledge, values, and competencies essential for addressing today’s global challenges.
Furthermore, the webinar featured a panel of speakers from academic institutions and government agencies who shared best practices and institutional experiences:
▪️Dr. Mary Ann Dulay, Education Program Supervisor, DepEd RO1, presented on GCED integration for community development.
▪️Dr. Rebecca Rosario Bercasio, Director for the Center for Teaching Excellence, Bicol University, discussed Bicol University’s approach to mainstreaming GCED.
▪️Dr. Mitchellene Rivo, Education Supervisor, CHED RO1, focused on the integration of GCED in service-learning initiatives.
▪️Dr. Romary Lincod, Director for Gender and Development Office, explored the intersection of gender advocacy and GCED in classroom practice.
The sessions were widely commended for their relevance and practical insights, prompting participants to engage in meaningful discussions on how to adapt GCED to their respective institutional contexts.
In addition, the event served as a valuable platform for collaboration and knowledge-sharing among key stakeholders in the education sector.
This initiative reflects PSU’s ongoing commitment to advancing sustainable development in education. Guided by the leadership of University President Dr. Elbert M. Galas, and supported by Dr. Ian D. Evangelista, Vice President for LIA, and Dr. Cristeta C. Dulos, Director for GCED, the university consistently integrates global citizenship as a core element of its academic programs and community engagement efforts.
Through programs such as this, PSU actively contributes to national efforts to embed sustainability and global responsibility within the Philippine educational framework, thereby reinforcing the university’s leadership in emphasizing the importance of preparing learners to engage with and contribute to a more interconnected and sustainable global society.
