At Pangasinan State University (PSU), education is not just a privilege—it is a right, a lifeline, and a pathway to empowerment. Through its flagship initiative, AKKBAY: Advancing Knowledge and Keeping Bridges Accessible for Youth, PSU reaffirms its commitment to breaking barriers for marginalized students, offering them opportunities to grow, lead, and create meaningful change.
AKKBAY is built on the principles of Enable, Elevate, and Enrich, ensuring that every student—regardless of background, circumstance, or ability—has the tools and support to succeed. Two recent events have exemplified this mission: the International Day of Persons with Disabilities Celebration and the Orientation for Marginalized Student-Applicants. Both initiatives reflect PSU’s unwavering dedication to inclusion, empowerment, and leadership development.

International Day of Persons with Disabilities: Celebrating Resilience and Leadership
PSU San Carlos Campus came alive with the spirit of inclusivity as it celebrated the International Day of Persons with Disabilities (PWDs) at the Campus LRC – Library. This event honored the resilience, determination, and achievements of persons with disabilities and other marginalized sectors, including out-of-school youth (OSY), Indigenous Peoples (IPs), and solo parents. It was a powerful reminder of PSU’s belief in the strength and potential of every individual.
Activities That Empowered and Inspired
The celebration was thoughtfully organized by the Office of Admission and Guidance Services, led by Mme. Noemi C. Carlos and Mme. Jenzy Pascua, in collaboration with the Peer Facilitators Circle (PFC). Under the guidance of Mme. Jexies Gloria-Abihay, PFC President, and Mr. Reynald D. Gloria, PFC Adviser, the event featured a series of activities that fostered self-expression, collaboration, and critical thinking.
1. “My Journey” Sharing Session:
Participants bravely shared their life stories, recounting struggles and triumphs that showcased their resilience and strength. For many, this was the first time they spoke openly about their experiences, creating a safe space for connection and understanding. These stories became a source of inspiration, proving that true leadership begins with the courage to share one’s journey.
2. Interactive Board Games and “Draw Your Thoughts”:
Creativity and collaboration took center stage in these activities. Through art and games, students expressed their ideas and built bonds with one another, reinforcing the importance of teamwork and communication in leadership.
3. On-the-Spot Slogan-Making Contest:
This activity challenged students to articulate their vision for inclusion and empowerment. The powerful slogans they created reflected a collective desire for a future where no one is left behind.
4. Guided Meditation:
In a moment of calm and reflection, students participated in mindfulness exercises that emphasized the importance of mental well-being. This activity highlighted how self-awareness and inner peace are essential components of effective leadership.
A Commitment to Inclusivity
The event culminated in a renewed commitment to championing the rights and welfare of marginalized students. Dr. Liza Lanuza-Quimson, Executive Director of PSU San Carlos Campus, encapsulated the day’s purpose:
“This celebration is more than just an event—it is a testament to our dedication to inclusivity. Through AKKBAY, we ensure that every student, regardless of their circumstances, feels valued, supported, and empowered to lead.”
