An orientation was conducted for the new scholars together with their parents as a headstart, highlighting the discussions on the scholarship’s provisions, scholars’ duties, and responsibilities. An open forum followed to clarify the queries and concerns of the qualifiers.
The JLSS is among DOST-Science Education Institute’s (SEI) undergraduate scholarship programs, which aims to support the education of third-year college students enrolled in priority science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) courses from identified academic institutions. It has three component programs: a) RA 7687 program, which is meant for socioeconomically challenged students; b) Merit program, which is aimed at students with high aptitude in STEM; and c) RA 10612, a program that aims to accelerate the production of science and mathematics teachers in secondary schools in the Philippines.
After the discussion of the provisions of the scholarship, the qualifiers signed their scholarship agreements, marking the start of their journey as scholars. It is followed by oath-taking to acknowledge their duties and responsibilities as scholars.
Ms. Carla Grace R. Pacheco, Scholarship Project Staff of DOST-1, reminded the qualifiers that the scholarship given to them is a privilege they need to value because not all are provided the chance to avail of the scholarship. They should also be mindful of their actions, for they now carry DOST’s name, and lastly, the scholars are reminded constantly to be grateful.
The 21 new scholars are among the 62 qualifiers in Region 1. All are from different campuses of Pangasinan State University (PSU) namely Lingayen, Urdaneta, Sta. Maria, Bayambang and San Carlos City Campus.
Dr. Roy C. Ferrer, Campus Executive Director of PSU Urdaneta City Campus, congratulated the scholars for successfully passing the examination, and he also acknowledged their parents for their unwavering support. In his message, he emphasized that the scholarship is a great opportunity for them, urging them to use the privileges as a challenge to strive in their studies.
Also, present in the event are scholarship coordinators of PSU, Mr. Leonardo Basilio of Bayambang Campus, Ms. Joanna Marie Delos Santos of Urdaneta City Campus, and Ms. Rowena Villamil of San Carlos City Campus.
