In a dedicated effort to foster mental health awareness and equip educators with vital skills in suicide prevention, Children of Fatima School in Mabalacat, Pampanga, tapped the expertise of Pangasinan State University. On February 10, 2023, licensed mental health counselor and Guidance Services Coordinator, Ms. Beverly Fernandez, was invited to lead a training session for the school’s teachers and personnel.
Ms. Fernandez’s session covered crucial aspects of suicide awareness and prevention, providing educators with the tools and knowledge to identify early warning signs of mental distress in students. She guided participants through practical intervention strategies and emphasized the importance of empathy, active listening, and creating a safe space within the school environment. The training also highlighted the school’s role in offering support and connecting students with resources that promote mental wellness.
This collaboration underscores both Pangasinan State University’s commitment to community outreach and Children of Fatima School’s proactive stance on mental health. By engaging PSU’s expertise, the school empowers its educators to become more vigilant and supportive figures, strengthening the support network that students need. The initiative serves as a model for how educational institutions can work together to address the critical issue of mental health among young people.
