URDANETA CITY, Pangasinan – Guided by the passion for innovation and a vision of economic growth, Engr. Rex B. Basuel, in his role as the Project Leader, has sparked creativity and empowered micro, small, and medium enterprises (MSMEs) throughout Northern Luzon. This remarkable endeavor is a historic turning point for the region.
From October 27, 2022, to October 27, 2025, the transformative Fabrication Laboratory (FABLAB) initiative is more than a mere laboratory; it’s a bustling hub of ingenuity and invention. This state-of-the-art digital manufacturing and prototyping facility empowers individuals and businesses to transform their ideas into tangible products. The PSU-DTI FABLAB is where innovation takes shape, offering the tools and resources needed to turn concepts into reality.
During a recent demonstration, Engr. Basuel discussed the principles of Ultra-Violet (UV) printing, a cutting-edge digital printing method that uses UV lights to dry or cure ink as it’s printed. This revolutionary technology enables the direct printing of unique designs, images, text, and textures onto a wide range of materials, from plaques to souvenirs and striking displays. To illustrate its versatility, he demonstrated how, with Latex Technology, this equipment could print on virtually any substrate to create signage, vehicle wraps, décor, stickers, posters, and more
The impact of PSU’s FABLAB transcends the boundaries of business. Educators and students at PSU are set to be the primary beneficiaries of this transformative endeavor. In a captivating exchange, Ar. Jumar Balicao demonstrated how to use the Latex Printer, while Engr. Ryndell Casem showed how to create a design using design software that would be printed using the Latex Printer, underlining its role as an incubator for inspiring and educating the next generation of innovators.
In the sphere of business, PSU’s FABLAB has formed key partnerships with local enterprises. Dozenmind, an online seller of t-shirt collections owned by Mr. Jasper Timoteo from Angeles City, Pampanga, serves a clientele ranging from the Philippines to Hollywood, including NBA celebrities and fans. Their partnership with PSU’s FABLAB has made it an essential hub for top-quality printing services.
Moreover, PSU faculty, students, and other universities are among the regular and direct clients of FABLAB, particularly for services like T-shirt printing, souvenirs, plaques, and more. The FABLAB has become a crucial gateway for their academic and personal projects, fostering a culture of entrepreneurship and innovation.
Recognizing the FABLAB’s potential, the United Architects of the Philippines selected it as the site for producing an exhibit using latex printing, which was proudly displayed at the fiesta in Dagupan City Paseo de Belen, demonstrating its versatility and impact.
Another local success story involves Dswordzman, a renowned maker of world-class knives and swords, owned by Ms. Jasmin and Joyce de Guzman in Brgy. Palacpalac, Pozorrubio, Pangasinan. This establishment was responsible for crafting the swords and blades used in blockbuster films such as “Lord of the Rings” and “Braveheart.” PSU’s FABLAB services have seamlessly integrated into their knife and sword making process, particularly in carving and cutting the leather used in the sword handles, further contributing to their local craftsmanship.
As PSU’s FABLAB continues to shine as a beacon of innovation, education, and business support, it exemplifies the limitless potential of local talent and technology, enriching the region’s landscape with each innovative step.
