The presence of first-generation college students in Higher Education Institutions (HEIs) such as the Pangasinan State University plays a crucial role in transforming not only the lives of the individual students and their family but as well as the socio – economic landscape of their respective communities. Their admission into HEIs represents a significant achievement, often characterized by resilience and determination.
First-generation students are defined as those whose parents did not earn a college degree or that they are the first member in their immediate family to enroll in a Higher Educational Institution.
They represent a significant number of student population, consisting of 40.10% of the students who started their academic degree in the 1st semester of School Year 2023 – 2024. To identify the first-generation students, a survey was conducted to 4, 317 students who have just started college. Out of 4, 317 students, the survey yielded a total of 1,731 students who identified themselves as the first one in their immediate family to enroll in college.
At Pangasinan State University, the presence of first-generation students is significantly valuable. They encourage future generations to seek higher education, improve the academic environment, and contribute to socioeconomic advancement.
Even if there are still obstacles to overcome, PSU’s dedication to helping these students succeed is essential. This data enables the institution to empower first-generation students by creating a cycle of education that has the capacity to change lives and invest in a better future for both individuals and communities. The survey result can be used to tailor targeted support services such as peer tutoring, academic advising, mentoring initiatives that may connect first generation students to faculty, and successful alumni, enriching their college journey and academic success. First-generation college students are not just the recipients of higher education; they are also important members of the academic community and change agents in their communities and families. Their success and tenacity serve as a reminder of the value of inclusive education and the continued support from institutions like PSU must provide.
