  5. PSU’s SoFFRel receives EPIC Award ...

Another feather is added to Pangasinan State University’s cap as it received the coveted Excellence in Project Implementation and Completion (EPIC) Award for one of its facilities – the Solid Freeform Fabrication Research Laboratory (SoFFReL) housed at its PSU Urdaneta City Campus.

SoFFReL is a project funded under the Institution Development Program (IDP) of the Department of Science and Technology – Philippine Council for Industry, Energy and Emerging Technology Research and Development (DOST-PCIEERD), which gave recognition to PSU for successfully completing the project with 100% progress and 90% budget utilization, on-time with no extensions and targets were met completely.

Dr. Enrico C. Paringit, Executive Director of DOST-PCIEERD, presented the award during the 14th Founding Anniversary of the DOST-PCIEERD held on June 19, 2024 in Manila as he highlighted the agency’s success in supporting 2,176 research and development projects between 2020 and 2023.

The award was received by PSU President Dr. Elbert M. Galas along with SoFFReL project leader Engr. Rex B. Basuel and project member Engr. Roy R. Flores.

“This significant achievement underscores PSU’s unwavering commitment to research and development. The university continues to excel in various innovative projects, further solidifying its reputation as a leading institution in the academic and scientific community. This recognition not only highlights the outstanding works of the SoFFReL team but also serves as an inspiration for future research endeavors,” President Galas said.
Meanwhile, Engr. Basuel explained that SoFFReL is a two-year project that started on January 2, 2021 and ended on January 1, 2023, during the height of the COVID-19 pandemic. Its vision is to strengthen research, development and innovation in science and engineering, while advancing education and workforce development in additive manufacturing within the region.

“While SoFFReL is a two-year project, PSU has continued its operation as part of its sustainability plan. PSU now sustains its operations like budget and personnel in charge of the operation. As of now, various activities are being conducted like research and development in engineering and architecture activities related to 3D printing, seminars and trainings,” the project leader added.
Incidentally, Engr. Basuel was also tapped as one of the speakers for the FireChat session of the Project Leader’s Summit to share common challenges, experiences and testimonials during the project implementation.
