Pangasinan State University, an institutional member of the Linguistics Society of the Philippines (LSP), recognizes the pivotal role of language education in societal development and inclusive growth.
Thus, PSU has collaborated with the LSP in organizing a seminar titled ‘𝐓𝐫𝐞𝐧𝐝𝐬 𝐢𝐧 𝐄𝐧𝐠𝐥𝐢𝐬𝐡 𝐋𝐚𝐧𝐠𝐮𝐚𝐠𝐞 𝐄𝐝𝐮𝐜𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧: 𝐓𝐞𝐚𝐜𝐡𝐢𝐧𝐠, 𝐑𝐞𝐬𝐞𝐚𝐫𝐜𝐡 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐂𝐨𝐦𝐦𝐮𝐧𝐢𝐭𝐲 𝐄𝐧𝐠𝐚𝐠𝐞𝐦𝐞𝐧𝐭’. The seminar aims to explore the dynamic interplay between and among linguistic scholarship, innovative teaching practices and community engagement within the field of English language education.
University President Dr. Elbert M. Galas, who was represented by Vice President Dr. Jenelyn V. Oboza said the activity will help the participants explore and celebrate the ever evolving world of language.
“𝐿𝑎𝑛𝑔𝑢𝑎𝑔𝑒 𝑖𝑠 𝑎 𝑝𝑜𝑤𝑒𝑟𝑓𝑢𝑙 𝑡𝑜𝑜𝑙 𝑡ℎ𝑎𝑡 𝑐𝑜𝑛𝑛𝑒𝑐𝑡𝑠 𝑢𝑠. 𝑇ℎ𝑒𝑟𝑒𝑓𝑜𝑟𝑒, 𝑤𝑒 ℎ𝑎𝑣𝑒 𝑎 𝑐𝑜𝑙𝑙𝑒𝑐𝑡𝑖𝑣𝑒 𝑟𝑒𝑠𝑝𝑜𝑛𝑠𝑖𝑏𝑖𝑙𝑖𝑡𝑦 𝑡𝑜 𝑘𝑒𝑒𝑝 𝑎𝑏𝑟𝑒𝑎𝑠𝑡 𝑤𝑖𝑡ℎ 𝑡𝑟𝑒𝑛𝑑𝑠 𝑎𝑠 𝑙𝑎𝑛𝑔𝑢𝑎𝑔𝑒 𝑖𝑠 𝑑𝑦𝑛𝑎𝑚𝑖𝑐 𝑎𝑛𝑑 𝑒𝑣𝑒𝑟 𝑐ℎ𝑎𝑛𝑔𝑖𝑛𝑔,” she quipped in the opening message.
The first resource speaker, Dr. Shirley Dita of De LaSalle University serving as Director of Professional Meetings, gave a lecture on the Trends in English Language Teaching where she introduced Corpus Linguistics and collocates.
On the other hand, Dr. Ariane M. Borlongan, Associate Professor of Socio-Linguistics at the Tokyo University of Foreign Studies in Japan, dealt on Trends in English Language Research and expounded on the role of research in Lingustics.
The President of LSP, Dr. Aldrin P. Lee from the University of the Philippines- Diliman, as the third speaker, discussed the trends in language and community engagement and proved why language engagement is so important for linguistics.
“𝐾𝑛𝑜𝑤 𝑦𝑜𝑢𝑟 𝑐𝑜𝑚𝑚𝑢𝑛𝑖𝑡𝑦, 𝑤ℎ𝑎𝑡 𝑖𝑡 𝑛𝑒𝑒𝑑𝑠 𝑎𝑛𝑑 𝑓𝑜𝑟 𝑤ℎ𝑜𝑚? 𝐹𝑜𝑟𝑚𝑢𝑙𝑎𝑡𝑒 𝑎𝑛 𝑎𝑔𝑒𝑛𝑑𝑎, 𝑚𝑎𝑘𝑒 𝑎 𝑟𝑒𝑠𝑒𝑎𝑟𝑐ℎ-𝑏𝑎𝑠𝑒𝑑 𝑒𝑥𝑡𝑒𝑛𝑠𝑖𝑜𝑛. 𝐸𝑛𝑔𝑎𝑔𝑒 𝑡ℎ𝑒 𝑝𝑢𝑏𝑙𝑖𝑐. 𝐼𝑡 𝑖𝑠 𝑐𝑟𝑢𝑐𝑖𝑎𝑙 𝑡ℎ𝑎𝑡 𝑤𝑒 𝑎𝑙𝑠𝑜 𝑙𝑒𝑎𝑟𝑛 ℎ𝑜𝑤 𝑡𝑜 𝑐𝑜𝑚𝑚𝑢𝑛𝑖𝑐𝑎𝑡𝑒 𝑑𝑖𝑠𝑎𝑠𝑡𝑒𝑟𝑠,” Dr. Lee emphasized.
Some 85 faculty members of PSU from the field of English language education participated in the seminar held at the convention hall of the Main campus.
Campus Executive Director Dr. Renato E. Salcedo of Lingayen formally closed the event by thanking the participants from the nine campuses and the three resource speakers, ushering in further collaborations with LSP including the membership of more PSUnians and the hosting of the LSP International Conference in 2025.
