Who would have thought that bamboo could be a good source for textile?
Innovation is just around the corner as 𝐏𝐚𝐧𝐠𝐚𝐬𝐢𝐧𝐚𝐧 𝐒𝐭𝐚𝐭𝐞 𝐔𝐧𝐢𝐯𝐞𝐫𝐬𝐢𝐭𝐲 in collaboration with the 𝐃𝐞𝐩𝐚𝐫𝐭𝐦𝐞𝐧𝐭 𝐨𝐟 𝐒𝐜𝐢𝐞𝐧𝐜𝐞 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐓𝐞𝐜𝐡𝐧𝐨𝐥𝐨𝐠𝐲–𝐏𝐡𝐢𝐥𝐢𝐩𝐩𝐢𝐧𝐞 𝐓𝐞𝐱𝐭𝐢𝐥𝐞 𝐑𝐞𝐬𝐞𝐚𝐫𝐜𝐡 𝐈𝐧𝐬𝐭𝐢𝐭𝐮𝐭𝐞 (𝐃𝐎𝐒𝐓-𝐏𝐓𝐑𝐈), 𝐃𝐎𝐒𝐓 𝐑𝐞𝐠𝐢𝐨𝐧𝐚𝐥 𝐎𝐟𝐟𝐢𝐜𝐞 𝟏, and 𝐃𝐎𝐒𝐓 𝐏𝐂𝐀𝐀𝐑𝐑𝐃 officially launched BTFIH on May 30, 2025.
PSU housed the first BTFIH in the province at the Lingayen Campus. 𝐔𝐧𝐢𝐯𝐞𝐫𝐬𝐢𝐭𝐲 𝐏𝐫𝐞𝐬𝐢𝐝𝐞𝐧𝐭, 𝐃𝐫. 𝐄𝐥𝐛𝐞𝐫𝐭 𝐌. 𝐆𝐚𝐥𝐚𝐬, who is attending the National Association of Foreign Student Advisers (NAFSA) 2025 Annual Conference and Expo, was ably represented by 𝐕𝐢𝐜𝐞 𝐏𝐫𝐞𝐬𝐢𝐝𝐞𝐧𝐭 𝐃𝐫. 𝐑𝐚𝐳𝐞𝐚𝐥𝐞 𝐑𝐞𝐬𝐮𝐥𝐭𝐚𝐲, 𝐕𝐢𝐜𝐞 𝐏𝐫𝐞𝐬𝐢𝐝𝐞𝐧𝐭 𝐃𝐫. 𝐑𝐨𝐬𝐚𝐫𝐢𝐨 𝐃𝐋.
𝐕𝐚𝐥𝐞𝐧𝐜𝐞𝐫𝐢𝐧𝐚, and 𝐏𝐒𝐔 𝐋𝐢𝐧𝐠𝐚𝐲𝐞𝐧 𝐂𝐄𝐃, 𝐃𝐫. 𝐑𝐞𝐧𝐚𝐭𝐨 𝐄. 𝐒𝐚𝐥𝐜𝐞𝐝𝐨 during the launching, said that PSU recognizes the hub’s role in fostering local innovation, promoting circular economy principles, and strengthening the bamboo textile value chain in the region.
“As we open the doors to this innovation hub, we also open opportunities: for research and development, for inclusive entrepreneurship, and for placing Pangasinan at the forefront of sustainable textile innovation,” VP Resultay shared.
The 𝐃𝐞𝐩𝐚𝐫𝐭𝐦𝐞𝐧𝐭 𝐨𝐟 𝐒𝐜𝐢𝐞𝐧𝐜𝐞 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐓𝐞𝐜𝐡𝐧𝐨𝐥𝐨𝐠𝐲 (𝐃𝐎𝐒𝐓) 𝐒𝐞𝐜𝐫𝐞𝐭𝐚𝐫𝐲 𝐃𝐫. 𝐑𝐞𝐧𝐚𝐭𝐨 𝐒𝐨𝐥𝐢𝐝𝐮𝐦 𝐉𝐫., 𝐃𝐎𝐒𝐓-𝐏𝐓𝐑𝐈 𝐃𝐢𝐫𝐞𝐜𝐭𝐨𝐫 𝐃𝐫. 𝐉𝐮𝐥𝐢𝐮𝐬 𝐋. 𝐋𝐞𝐚𝐧𝐨 𝐉𝐫., 𝐃𝐎𝐒𝐓 𝐑𝐞𝐠𝐢𝐨𝐧 𝐈 𝐃𝐢𝐫𝐞𝐜𝐭𝐨𝐫 𝐃𝐫. 𝐓𝐞𝐫𝐞𝐬𝐢𝐭𝐚 𝐓𝐚𝐛𝐚𝐨𝐠, 𝐕𝐏 𝐑𝐞𝐬𝐮𝐥𝐭𝐚𝐲, 𝐅𝐚𝐜𝐮𝐥𝐭𝐲 𝐑𝐞𝐠𝐞𝐧𝐭 𝐌𝐫. 𝐀𝐜𝐞 𝐉𝐨𝐡𝐧 𝐌𝐚𝐫𝐤 𝐏. 𝐋𝐢𝐰𝐚𝐧𝐚𝐠, and 𝐃𝐫. 𝐒𝐚𝐥𝐜𝐞𝐝𝐨 led the launching ceremony.
Sec. Solidum shared that the DOST reinforces its commitment to strategically deploying innovation hubs across the country to achieve the goal of not only generating new knowledge but also recognizing the significant role that bamboo textiles play in regional economic activity and development.
“Through the Program, they are provided with textile fibers that are locally developed and produced, truly Filipino, truly natural and truly renewable. This unique and strategic product positioning can generate higher value as the fiber is converted to fabric and into apparel, among other products,” the secretary added.
The secretary congratulated Pangasinan State University for the support and dedication on mainstreaming the bamboo textile fibers for wearables, home styles, technical textiles, and beyond.
“This commitment embodies our shared vision with the DOST-PTRI to transform local resources into globally competitive, sustainable textile innovations that empower people and protect the planet, as we move forward with purpose-cultivating a greener future, driven by innovation, research and community-centered development,” Dr. Salcedo also said.
The PSU Bamboo Textile Fiber Innovation Hub which is a second hub in Region I can produce 40 kilograms of raw bamboo textile fiber and later on to spinnable fibers and readily available yarns.
The BTFIH will be utilized not only for bamboo textile fiber production but also for the conduct of various bamboo textile fiber-related research by the students of the Pangasinan State University and nearby State Colleges and Universities.
The Department of Trade and Industry – Pangasinan Provincial Office Director, Natalia Basto-Dalaten, Provincial Government of Pangasinan officials Atty. Ron Dale Castillo, Engr. Arnold C. Santos, representing Gov. Ramon “Mon-Mon” Guico III, LGU Lingayen officials, Mayor Leopoldo N. Bataoil and VM Mac Dexter G. Malicdem, LGU representatives, Bamboo Textiles Program Partners, and the farmers and weavers’ organizations of Pangasinan attended the launching ceremony.
