Pangasinan State University (PSU) organized a Quantum Computing Research Enhancement Training online series from September to November 2024. capped by a special session in a face-to-face activity held on November 22 at the REI Conference Room.
The initiative engaged 33 participants from the various campuses of the university —14 from Lingayen, another 14 from Urdaneta, two from Bayambang, two from San Carlos and one from PSU-Binmaley.
The training was facilitated by the Quantum Computing Society of the Philippines, in collaboration with the Advanced Science and Technology Institute under the Department of Science and Technology. (DOST-ASTI).
University President Dr. Elbert M. Galas, himself an IT expert, said the initiative on Quantum research training aligns with the strategic vision of transforming PSU into a SMART university emphasizing its role as a leader in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Environment Research (STEER).
It can be remembered that Dr. Galas was recognized by the DOST as a Science and Technology Ambassador early this year.
“Using technology is one of my platforms when I applied as president of the university. Gagawain po natin yan. We will strengthen industry-driven curriculum. We will invest in state -of-the-art laboratories to make our students practice the actual technology and not just the theories, thus making them employable globally,” Dr. Galas said.
Led by the Office of Research, Extension and Innovation Vice President Dr. Razeale Resultay, the program equipped PSU faculty with advanced skills and knowledge in quantum computing research, exploring applications in biological sciences, quantum education, smart sensors, control systems, and quantum software development.
STEER Hub Head Dr. Rhowell Dellosa added that the efforts prepared participants to lead innovative research addressing challenges across various sectors, including fisheries, agriculture, engineering and environmental studies.
The training also laid the groundwork for the potential establishment of quantum computing facilities at PSU, a move expected to enhance the university’s research capabilities.
Quantum Computing Society of the Philippines personnel who served as resource speakers include: President Bobby Corpuz, Jr, Engr. Dylan Josh Lopez, Dr. Henry Adorna, Mr. Julius Evangelio and Mr. Elmer Perano of DOST-ASTI.
By fostering innovation and collaboration with academic institutions, government agencies and industry partners, PSU positions itself as a future hub for quantum computing research in the Philippines.
