On track with its mantra to bring truthful and accurate information to the PSU community, Pangasinan State University took part in the 1st National Summit on Journalism with the theme “EmpowerED Journalism: Cultivating Communication Synergy through Student-Educator-Practitioner Collaboration.”
The national event, organized by the New Era University-College of Communication (NEU-CoC), gathered some 300 media practitioners, educators and students onsite at the NEU Hall in Quezon City including those from British Columbia and some 283 online participants to include those from Philippine academic institutions, Australia and Qatar.
NEU President Dr. Alberto Domingo said the activity aims to equip and refresh Communication teachers and students with the necessary skills, updates and trends on journalism and learn from the veteran media practitioners.
Incidentally, President Domingo is an alumnus of Pangasinan State University having earned his Doctor of Philosophy degree from PSU Urdaneta Campus.
The summit boasts of an impressive line up of journalists who discussed journalism trends incorporating their own personal experience. For the first day, after a welcome remarks from Minister Edwil Zabala, the plenary started with discussions from GMA-7 news reporter and anchor Ms. Mariz Umali who talked on ‘Women in Media: Redefining the Newsroom’ followed by seasoned host and Net25 program anchor Ms. Ali Sotto who tackled ‘News Commentary’. In the afternoon, Undersecretary Eduardo Punay of the Department of Social Welfare and Development spoke on ‘Disaster and Risk Communication” followed by Dr. Jose Reuben Alagaran II, the President Emeritus of the Philippine Association for Media and Information Literacy, who dealt with ‘Media Construction and Deconstruction’.
“Discipline, accurate information, choice of words are important (in journalism). When you develop certain messages, these would create a certain impact to the audience. So we have to be creative and compelling in using the messages as these can influence a person’s attitude and disposition,” Dr. Alagaran quipped.
The second day of the Summit opened with a talk from Senator Raffy Tulfo on ‘Journalism and Public Service’ followed by reporter and columnist Mr. Michael Ubac of the Philippine Daily Inquirer with his insightful tips on ‘Journalism of Verification in the Internet Era.’ TV personality Ms. Korina Sanchez came next and laid out her ‘Advocacy Journalism: Voicing for the Voiceless,’ followed by the event’s final speaker Mr. Raffy Tima who discussed his experience on ‘Conflict Journalism’
“To become an effective journalist, tell the right story. To tell the right story, ask the right questions and disseminate (the story) properly,” Sen. Tulfo explained.
Additionally, Eagle Broadcasting President Mr. Caesar Vallejos gave the closing remarks reminiscing his school days as a journalism contestant joning regional and national schools press coferences.
The Director for Public Relations and Information Office (PRIO) Asst. Prof. Venus May Sarmiento, under the Local and International Affairs Division, represented PSU in the two-day summit held on May 28-29, 2024.
