Carrying out the Pangasinan State University’s strategic goals, a seminar-workshop dubbed ‘Ganda, Galing, Gahum, Giliw, Gugma: Adopting a Filipino Model of Global Citizenship Education (GCED)’ was conducted for University Leaders on November 5, 2022, at the Dr. Telesforo N. Boquiren Convention Hall.
GCED is a strategic area of UNESCO’s Education Sector programme and builds on the work of peace and human rights education. It aims to instill in learners the values, attitudes, and behaviors that support responsible global citizenship: creativity, innovation, and commitment to peace, human rights and sustainable development.
The seminar-workshop was a standing exercise whereby all participants were asked to stand for the whole duration of the event.
Vice President for Academic and Students Affairs Dr. Manolito C. Manuel spearheaded the event and explained that the workshop is a continuing professional development engagement that focuses on global citizenship education vis-à-vis the global sustainable development goals.
“Through partnerships, we send our faculty and students to visit other countries to get vital insights that we can use for the betterment of our educational system. Peace, security, and global citizenship are already in the curriculum, but we are further strengthening it, especially in terms of instructional materials, ways of teaching, and even the use of films, dances, and other forms of art to transmit these ideas and concepts to our learners,” Dr. Manuel said.
Dr. Elbert M. Galas, VP for Administration and Linkages, Dr. Marcelo Gutierrez, Jr., VP for Quality Assurance, along with the Campus Executive Directors from the nine campuses, School of Advanced Studies and Open University System with their faculty members, college deans, OVPASA Directorate, heads and staff and GEE 4 focal person, also engaged in the said activity.
The seminar-workshop was facilitated by Dr. Edizon Angeles Fermin, founder of EdSpeaks which is a professional development team that focuses on adaptive, innovative, and resilient education. He is currently the Vice President for Academic Affairs of the National Teachers College under the supervision of the Yuchengco-Ayala education ecosystem.
In responding to the complex educational implications of the recent COVID-19 pandemic, Dr. Fermin currently provides expert advice to the CHED Technical Working Group and Chairperson’s Advisory Council on Flexible Learning.
During the workshop, Dr. Fermin stated that six conditions continue to shape the evolution of the fragile world: disruption, volatility, uncertainty, complexity, ambiguity, and diversity (DVUCAD).
“Each of these conditions demands a network of interconnected knowledge, skills, and attitudes that every citizen must demonstrate for the ultimate purpose of promoting the sustainable development of both people and planet,” he added.
The event culminated with an exchange of questions and answers and synthesis. Pangasinan State University, known for its quality education and excellence in service delivery, will continue to integrate global citizenship education principles, practices, and competencies for the growth of the institution.
