Pursuant to Executive Order No. 26 issued by the President of the Philippines, RE: Providing for the Establishment of Smoke Free Environments in public and enclosed spaces, a No Smoking Policy was ordered and implemented by our then President Dr. Dexter R. Buted on October 18, 2017 in the university and across all campuses of PSU.
Since then, Pangasinan State University (PSU) has taken a proactive stance on public health by implementing a comprehensive smoke-free policy across all its campuses. This initiative, firmly rooted in PSU’s commitment to fostering a healthy, safe, and supportive environment, reflects the university’s dedication to promoting good health and well-being for its students, staff, and visitors. By embracing a smoke-free policy, PSU aligns with Sustainable Development Goal 3 (SDG 3) – ensuring healthy lives and promoting well-being for all ages.
The smoke-free policy prohibits smoking in all areas within the university’s premises, including indoor and outdoor spaces, parking lots, sports facilities, and common areas. PSU’s decision to implement this policy is backed by research demonstrating the harmful effects of smoking and secondhand smoke. Recognizing the risks posed by exposure to tobacco smoke – including respiratory diseases, cardiovascular issues, and increased cancer risk – PSU is taking a stand to protect everyone on campus from these health threats.
The university’s strict adherence to a no-smoking policy demonstrates leadership in creating a safe and healthy campus, sending a powerful message about the importance of health-centered policies in educational institutions.
